The Beagle – The smallest Hound Dog

The Beagle is a well built, strong hound dog that shares a resemblance with the typical Foxhound. It has a long skull with a squarely built body shape. Beagles have large hazel or brown eyes that are well positioned from each other. Their noses are usually black and come with full nostrils. They have low positioned ears but with a wide and long pendant. They have moderate size tails which do not curl up, with well-built feet.

However, the beagle is a very fun animal to have, very friendly, loving, and gentle around people, including children. The beagle is also good with other dogs. They are very intelligent and have strong reasoning ability, very sensitive and strong-willed, but they need good training and patience.

Origin

The first Beagle ever came into existence around 1500. They were usually used for hunting small forest animals like rabbits and quail. The Beagle was believed to be a cross breed of some English hounds and the Harrier. This breed is the most popular in USA, Canada, UK and some other countries. They are good for hunting alone or in packs. The breed name also originated from the French word ‘be gentle,e’ and this is because of their baying voice.

Adaptability

Provided they undergo enough exercise on a daily basis, the Beagle adapts well to new homes and environments as far there is no boredom. They are very fond of gardens, and they like the scents of gardens. If there is a garden in the house they live in; you will always find them wandering in the garden. They like outdoors and will never get bored of it.

However, Beagles cannot be termed as watchdogs because of their social nature. They like to move around with people even strangers alike and other dogs. They are very sensitive animals and will inform their owners if there are strangers around or things they do not like.

Training

The Beagle can be trained and will learn training faster because they are intelligent dogs (much like the poodles for example). However, this training must commence as early as possible, so they get adapted to it before they become non-challenge. If they have the right training, guidance, and education from an early age, they groom well with it, but they need patience for this to work out perfectly.

This breed cannot be handled with levity hands at all times but they need not be too hard on but must be fairly treated and handled. And the form of unruly behavior on their part should not be given room too but should be dealt with in a fair manner. Beagles love to bark for the universe to hear. Hence, they must be trained on how to bark minimally from an early age. They must be trained on how not to bark excessively and annoyingly because if allowed, they can bark and bark for hours without getting tired of it since they like hearing their voice(s).

Beagle Lifespan and Health

The average expected a lifespan of any Beagle is around 12 years to 15 years if they have proper care and nutrition. Also, Beagles suffer several health conditions which as an owner you must be aware of they include: Canine Epilepsy, Steroid Responsive Meningitis, Cherry Eyes among others. These dogs are also prone to what is known as reverse sneezing, but this can be well managed and tolerated as it is not dangerous to their health. Beagles are also prone to infections because of their large ears.

In conclusion, just like other dogs, Beagles needs to be handled well and trained excellently. They need good nutrition to stay healthy, fit and sharp.
